Tumu´s Climate Change Trip to Town

On Monday morning this week we lined up on the balcony outside tumu . Then we walked down to the bus. It was a bit late so we waited in the library. Once it arrived we clambered aboard and we were off on an exciting adventure.

After about ten minutes we were there At Margaret Mahy,  the teacher did a second roll call to make sure everyone was there. Everyone was exhilarated skipping and jumping all the way down the riverbed past the food trucks and past the playground to the canoe chairs. There we put down the bags and sat on the tarp.

Hannah was there waiting for us she was sorting out some equipment. Then she assured us that the person teaching us will come soon. Around 15 minutes later she was there she held up a board with funny little pictures on it.

Then she asked us what we thought they were? We soon learnt that Christchurch’s biggest problem was cars and any vehicles. After that was my favourite part, we were told to go across the bridge where we had previously spotted an orchard.

The Christchurch city council  person explained that the garden was free for everybody it was called Ōtautahi Orchard. we raced over asking what was edible and what was not. I found this shocking it was that 83% of people still use petrol cars in Christchurch and less than 1% use EVs What?!!

Here are some photos:

At the end we decided we would do something to help climate change. I put my hand up and said I would ask my family to do a meat free Monday. What could you do?

  1. Hi Ava

It was a great trip into town, wasn’t it. I really liked visiting the orchard too and I can’t wait to take my daughters once the weather gets warmer. Did you eat anything at the orchard?

I too found it shocking that 83% of people use petrol cars – we really need to be better at biking or taking the bus.

    Thanks,
    Mrs Carney
